Sports injuries! (Ahem… weekend warriors)

What’s worse than tennis elbow?

Golf balls!

Sheesh, sorry… these are the jokes.

After a sedentary work week, scaling a mountain on Saturday and 36-holes on Sunday can take their toll by way of common sports injuries.

The 7 most common sports injuries are:

🥲Ankle sprain

😭Groin pull

😩Hamstring strain

😖Shin splints

😦Knee injury: ACL tear

😤Knee injury: Patellofemoral syndrome — injury resulting from the repetitive movement of your kneecap against your thigh bone

😞Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

Some sports injuries can be prevented. We sometimes bring these injuries upon ourselves due to lack of conditioning for our fave, but irregular, activities.

Daily workouts benefit us overall by maintaining conditioning so that we’re safer and more coordinated (hi, um.. weekend warrior?).

Workouts should start with a warm-up to prevent common injuries as it increases blood flow to the muscles and improves flexibility.

Overuse injuries are preventable! Avoid heavy exercise after long absence. Whether hiking, running, martial arts, or team sports, lightly working the relevant muscle groups weeks before participation makes a big difference.

Knowing when enough is enough is important. Fatigue removes the body’s protective mechanisms, increasing risk of injury. Better to play a bit less today than to be unable to play for months. We can always come back tomorrow!

We see all kinds of common sports injuries at my clinic and treat with a variety of evidence based modalities to best serve our patients.
